Acupuncture for Menstrual Issues
Finding Your Natural Rhythm
The menstrual cycle is often called the "fifth vital sign"—a powerful reflection of our internal health and vitality. However, for many, this cycle is marked by pain, unpredictable moods, or the frustration of irregular rhythms. Whether you are living with the inflammatory pain of Endometriosis, the hormonal complexities of PCOS, or the emotional "storm" of PMDD, these experiences can leave you feeling disconnected from your own body.
In Chinese Medicine, pain or discomfort relating to your period, that is disruptive to your daily life is not normal and should be assessed. Instead, we see this as a sign that your system’s natural flow and rhythm has become obstructed or depleted. By looking at your unique experience, we work to shift your body back into a place of smooth, rhythmic flow.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective choice for supporting gynaecological health. According to the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), research indicates that acupuncture can influence the hormonal and nervous systems to improve cyclical wellbeing.
What to Expect
My clinics in Hackney and Central London are designed to be quiet sanctuaries. Your session is a dedicated hour of "non-doing" where you can safely let go. As acupuncture is a body-based therapy, we can talk as little or as much as feels comfortable—ultimately, it is the needles that will do the work.
During your Initial Consultation, we will delve into your past and present experience with your menstrual cycle; we will discuss any discomfort and pain—both physical and emotional. It is important to me to offer a space of safety and non-judgement, where your decisions on contraceptives, HRT, or other pharmacological interventions are your own and can be complemented by acupuncture.
Often, acupuncture can help with the side effects of certain treatments or with symptoms that don’t seem to be improving with Western approaches alone. We live in a society where women are frequently judged for the decisions they make about their own bodies—this is an opportunity to be listened to, empowered, and supported. Your choices are your own, and I am here to augment and support your recovery.

The Science Stuff:
PCOS: Research suggests that acupuncture may help to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. Clinical studies indicate it can help lower elevated testosterone levels and improve insulin sensitivity by increasing sympathetic nervous system activity, which may support more frequent and regular ovulation.
PMS & PMDD: Evidence shows that acupuncture may help improve PMS symptoms by modulating the nervous system’s response to hormonal fluctuations. It helps to regulate serotonin and endorphins—which can provide a grounding effect for the anxiety and low mood associated with PMDD.
Endometriosis: For chronic pelvic pain, research indicates that acupuncture can help reduce inflammation and improve blood flow to the pelvic organs. By stimulating the release of natural pain-killing chemicals, it may offer a non-pharmacological way to manage cyclical discomfort.
Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods): Clinical studies suggest that acupuncture may reduce the intensity of cramping by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins.
