Acupuncture for Anxiety
A Space to Just Be
In our modern world of constantly being “on’” it is easy for our internal systems to get stuck in a state of survival. You might experience this as a busy mind that won’t switch off, a constant "background hum" of worry, or physical symptoms like a tight chest, fast heart-rate or generalised tension in the body.
In Five Element Acupuncture, we don’t just treat the symptoms of anxiety; we look for the source of the "disharmony." By listening to the unique way your anxiety manifests we can work to help your system return to its natural state of safety and resilience. Treatment offers your body a "reset button," allowing you to move from a place of contraction back into a place of flow.
Acupuncture is an increasingly popular choice for those seeking a non-pharmacological (without medication) approach to mental wellbeing. According to the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), research suggests that acupuncture can be as effective as conventional talking therapies and medication, with significantly fewer side effects.
What to Expect
In my Hackney and Central London clinics, I provide a dedicated sanctuary for those navigating the "noise" of anxiety. Your treatment is a time for deep "unplugging," where the goal is to shift your nervous system out of "fight or flight" and back into a state of receptive safety.
I will always take the time to work at your pace; treatment is a collaboration and I want you to feel as comfortable as possible. It is important you feel as relaxed and in control - this may mean that in our first few sessions we use fewer needles or alternative techniques (acupressure or ear seeds) on certain points until you become more comfortable. We are often working with a very alert nervous system, so I believe the less stimuli the better. My technique and style are naturally very calming and gentle.
I am here to answer any questions you may have beforehand, to help work out if acupuncture is right for you, right now. Please book in a free 15 min no obligation phone consultation to discuss your needs.
The Science Stuff:
Regulating the Nervous System: Research shows that acupuncture can stimulate the nervous system to trigger the release of endorphins and other "feel-good" neurochemicals. This helps shift the body from a Sympathetic (fight or flight) state into a Parasympathetic (rest and digest) state.
Balancing Brain Chemistry: Clinical studies indicate that acupuncture can influence the areas of the brain responsible for reducing sensitivity to pain and stress.
Hormonal Harmony: There is evidence that acupuncture helps to down-regulate the production of cortisol (the stress hormone) and helps to stabilise the HPA axis—the body’s central stress response system.
Improving Resilience: Systematic reviews have found that acupuncture can significantly reduce the severity of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), often providing immediate relief that builds over a course of treatment.
